Passports do not contain information about gender identity, they generally contain a marking describing the sex of the individual. In order to verify gender using passports, we are forced to make a simplifying assumption matching passport sex to a gender.

Default passport sex to gender matching

By default, if your passport sex is listed as "female", your gender will be automatically verified if it is listed as "woman"; and similarly for "male" on a passport matching to "man" on your profile. If your passport shows your sex as "unspecified", your gender will be verified regardless of the value.

Closing

We have implemented this feature with a simplifying assumption because we believe it increases safety on the platform as a whole. We recognize that this is overly simplistic and does not match the situation of all our members.
